Same Day Voter Registration

Please note that there is same-day voter registration available at the polls for all elections. The same requirements to register to vote apply. 

Registering to Vote in the State of New Hampshire

Register to vote in person at the Town Clerk's Office during window hours OR during a meeting of the Supervisors of the Checklist (supervisor's meetings are announced at the Chesterfield Post Office and in the Town Office Building).

Approximately 10 to 13 days before an election, voter registration closes at the Town Clerk's Window. Same-day registration and voting are available in New Hampshire. Please review the information below to ensure you bring appropriate identification required.

HB1569, which passed the NH legislature during the 2024 session, requires all voters who were dropped from a town voting list due to inactivity must demonstrate all the requirements listed below to be re-added to the voting rolls.

To register to vote in New Hampshire, you must show documentation to demonstrate:

  • US Citizenship
  • Age
  • Photo ID
  • Domicile address in the town where you are voting

Examples to meet these requirements are:

  • US Citizenship = Birth Certificate, Passport, naturalization paperwork
  • Age = Birth Certificate, passport, naturalization paperwork, State ID
  • Photo ID = Driver's License, Passport, Student ID
  • Domicile address in town = State ID with current Chesterfield address, vehicle registration with current address, rental/mortgage agreement

Please note if your name has changed and you are using a birth certificate to demonstrate US Citizenship that you must also provide records of all name changes (ex. a marriage certificate or court documents from a name change).

If you are temporarily away, are not registered to vote, and need an absentee ballot, you may request an absentee ballot with absentee voter registration materials. Note that the same requirements for registration apply to registration with absentee voting.

Obtaining an Absentee Ballot Application

Note: All absentee ballot applications must be either mailed, emailed, faxed, or dropped off by the absentee voter requesting the ballot. A spouse may not drop off a completed application for their partner. (Please note that no electronic signatures are accepted on the application.)

Absentee Ballot Laws have changed effective September 30,2025. The Secretary of State's Office has requested that all Town Clerk's display their website for the most current information on new Absentee Ballots.

If you are a Uniformed or Overseas Voter, go to this webpage and learn more about requesting a Federal Postcard Application (FPA). Please note know a single application is valid for the entire year. Apply early.

Completed forms with all required information as discussed by the Secretary of State's office for absentee voting can be:

  • Dropped off at the Town Clerk's Office during operating hours - note that the absentee voter must drop off in person to pick up a ballot.
  • Emailed to the town clerk (no electronic signatures accepted on form)
  • Mailed to the town clerk: Town Clerk, P.O. Box 64, Chesterfield, NH 03443

Once an absentee ballot application has been received, the Town Clerk's office will hand out or mail out a ballot. Only FPA can be emailed to voter. Please make sure to use a pen OR a Number 2 pencil to complete your absentee ballot, no markers or Sharpies. Ensure that the ballot is put in the affidavit envelope and that you sign the envelope as instructed on the How To page enclosed with all absentee ballots.
